nabi - DreamTab

The start-up that created world class tablets for children.

THE ASK

At the time, nabi was the leader in kids technology and entertainment with a growth trajectory of epic proportions. The company was Inc 500’s fastest growing company two years in a row which led to quite a bit of attention, which piqued the interest of Dreamworks. This led to a partnership between both companies to develop products that were seamlessly integrated with all of Dreamworks’ properties.

THE SOLUTION

The company leadership and the product team decided to develop a singular tablet solely based on Dreamworks properties that was to host a suite of over 13 apps, including parental control apps for kids, kid friendly clocks, photo sharing, chat apps, and at the time, the only kid friendly app store. All of which needed to be completed before Christmas.

KEY CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Developed User Flows for the experience.

  • Created annotated wires for all 16 apps concurrently.

  • Worked closely with animators, UI designers, overseas developers, product managers and project managers to develop efficient workflows and sprint schedules.

Tools Used

  • Omnigraffle

  • JIRA

Ideation and Concept Development

I collaborated with the Design Director and Product Manager to define the needs and goals for the apps.
We also conducted a competitive analysis to determine key features that would ensure a kid friendly experience. We then draft sketches for some of the apps to get a sense for layouts and features.

Developing User Flows

This is just one of many user flows that was developed in Omnigraffle to help the developers understand the logic of the apps. Suffice to say, I was seeing boxes and arrows for weeks to come.

Wireframes & Annotations

I worked closely with the UI designers and creative managers to finalize the functions and features of the apps. I then created and managed the annotated wires for all 13 apps and was in charge of walking the developers (in Taiwan) through each app in how it would function and calling out edge cases.

Success.

After the weeks of late nights working with the developers to have the projects developed to spec, we were happy to say that we finished on schedule and the first ever kids tablet in partnership with DreamWorks was birthed and ready to introduce kids to the world of technology and their favorite DreamWorks characters.

RESULTS

The DreamTab experience successfully created a curated digital environment for kids that was both educational and well designed. The tablet was even featured in The Verge!
